Thousands of very viable business ideas, ideas that no doubt have
multi-million if not multi-billion dollar potential, have failed simply because
of a lack of a viable marketing plan.
I'm astounded at the number of business plans that read like a million
dollars with all kinds of projections and assumptions, yet there's hardly a
paragraph or two that delve into the marketing aspects of the plan. I see
statements like "active magazine advertising, combined with web oriented promotions
will generate incoming sales inquires" or, "the marketing budget of $100,000
is more than adequate to generate substantial sales leads." Oh really....?
It's terminology like this that tells me that the writer has hardly put any
thought into the realties of the marketing and sales equation. And in some
industries, like the current dot com craze with all of these small technology
start-ups, I routinely see private placement offerings with no more than a
sentence or two in the entire proposal that deals with marketing. Yet I
reiterate, many of these offerings involve a basic concept that is often very
innovative and intriguing.
However, without a solid marketing plan in place the
odds of that idea taking root and growing to the point of profitability is
minimal.
If you've been running your business without a marketing plan in place, no
doubt you've endured the frustration of seeing viable dollars wasted on what
seemed at first to be really wonderful advertising and sales promotion.
Yet I assure you, if you're basic business concept is sound, you're not far from
finding the combination of marketing elements that can propel you and your business
over the top.
On the other hand, if you are in the planning stage, do you, your great idea and your precious
budget dollars a favor and think, think, think about marketing...
Then put it in writing and think some more. Keep doing your homework
until you know you've got it right.
